3 Things You Didn't Know About Perimenopause

Perimenopause can start as early as your 30s or as late as your 50s and can last up to 10 years. It's the magical time in a woman’s life when hot flashes, irregular periods and mood swings will make you want to scream into your pillow. We’ve all heard about these symptoms but here are three surprising things you may not know about perimenopause.

1. Your sex drive might go into overdrive.

While you might assume that the hormonal fluctuations of perimenopause would put a damper on your libido, the opposite can actually be true. As estrogen levels drop, testosterone levels can rise, which can lead to an increase in sexual desire. So, if you find yourself feeling a little more frisky than usual, don't be surprised. And why not embrace it! Who says you can't have a little fun during this chaotic time?

2. Your memory might take a hit.

Sorry to break it to you, but perimenopause can mess with your brain in more ways than one. Not only can it cause mood swings and brain fog, but it can also impact your memory. Studies have shown that women going through perimenopause may have trouble with short-term memory and the ability to recall words. So, if you forget where you put your keys or struggle to come up with a simple word, don't fret. It's all part of the process.

3. Your smoking habit may kickstart perimenopause sooner than you’d like.

Smokers start having perimenopausal symptoms up to nine years earlier than non-smokers. According to Jennifer Harrington, Menopause Specialist, the earlier you experience menopause, the more health risks you are exposed to later in life. This can also lead to more intense peri- and menopausal symptoms than non-smokers, including hot flashes and difficulty sleeping. But, if you quit smoking early enough, the less likely you will be affected.
